Rudal ini efektif dipakai untuk banyak target seperti kendaraan lapis baja, pertahanan udara, kapal dan fasilitas darat lain.

Maverick memiliki bentuk silindris dan memiliki ujung yang terbuat dari gelas untuk pemandu elektro-optik atau seng sulfida untuk pemandu inframerah, sayap berbentuk delta serta hulu ledak yang terletak di bagian tengah.

Rudal ini dapat membobol beton bertulang (R300/5.000 psi) hingga tembok beton sedalam 2 meter atap tembok biasa sedalam 5 meter. Untuk menembus baja, Mavercik bisa menembus baja (R1800) setebal 15 cm.

Hingga saat ini belum ada benda yang mempunyai ketebalan baja sampai 15 cm. Dengan kata lain tidak ada sasaran atas permukaan yang tidak dapat ditembus Maverick.

Dari beragam jenis pesawat tempur yang dimiliki TNI AU, rudal ini hanya bisa digotong oleh F-16 Fighting Falcon dan Hawk 100/200.
