Kematian, sesungguhnya merupakan hakikat yang menakutkan, akan menghampiri semua manusia. Tidak ada yang mampu menolaknya. Dan tidak ada seorangpun kawan yang mampu menahannya.

Kematian datang berulang-ulang, menjemput setiap orang, orang tua maupun anak-anak, orang kaya maupun orang miskin, orang kuat maupun orang lemah. Semuanya menghadapi kematian dengan sikap yang sama, tidak ada kemampuan menghindarinya, tidak ada kekuatan, tidak ada pertolongan dari orang lain, tidak ada penolakan, dan tidak ada penundaan. Semua itu mengisyaratkan, bahwa kematian datang dari Pemilik kekuatan yang paling tinggi. Meski sedikit, tak seorang pun manusia memiliki wewenang atas kematian.

Hanya di tangan Allah semata pemberian kehidupan. Dan hanya di tanganNya, mengambil kembali yang telah Dia berikan pada ajal yang telah digariskan. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala berfirman:

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَآئِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَمَنْ زُحْزِحَ عَنِ النَّارِ وَأُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فَازَ وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلاَّ مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ

Tiap-tiap yang berjiwa akan merasakan mati. Dan sesungguhnya pada hari kiamat sajalah disempurnakan pahalamu. Barangsiapa dijauhkan dari neraka dan dimasukkan ke dalam surga, maka sungguh ia telah beruntung. Kehidupan dunia itu tidak lain hanyalah kesenangan yang memperdayakan. [Ali Imran:185].

Maut merupakan ketetapan Allah. Seandainya ada seseorang yang selamat dari maut, niscaya manusia yang paling mulia pun akan selamat. Namun maut merupakan Sunnah ketetapanNya atas seluruh makhluk. Allah berfirman:

إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ

Sesungguhnya engkau (Nabi Muhammad Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) akan mati dan sesungguhnya mereka akan mati (pula). [Az Zumar:30].

Tidak ada manusia yang kekal di dunia ini.

وَمَا جَعَلْنَا لِبَشَرٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ الْخُلْدَ أَفَإِنْ مِّتَّ فَهُمُ الْخَالِدُونَ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَآئِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ وَنَبْلُوكُم بِالشَّرِّ وَالْخَيْرِ فِتْنَةً وَإِلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُونَ }

Kami tidak menjadikan hidup abadi bagi seorang manusiapun sebelum kamu (Muhammad), maka jikalau kamu mati, apakah mereka akan kekal? Tiap-tiap yang berjiwa akan merasakan mati. Kami akan menguji kamu dengan keburukan dan kebaikan sebagai cobaan (yang sebenar-benarnya). Dan hanya kepada Kamilah kamu dikembalikan. [Al Anbiya:34-35].

Andai kematian lekat dalam ingatan, pastilah diri akan selalu terjaga dan tak mudah goyah terbawa gelombang fitnah dan maksiat.

Itulah sebabnya mengapa Rasulullah -shallallahu alaihi wasallam-menyuruh ummatnya untuk banyak mengingat sesuatu yang diilustrasikannya sebagai penghancur kenikmatan.

Mengingat kematian juga berfungsi sebagai tali kekang yang kuat untuk menahan dorongan nafsu liar manusia yang sewaktu-waktu dapat mencapai batas maksimal.

Semoga Allah mengaruniakan pada kita husnul khatimah, akhir kehidupan yang baik.
