SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.

dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from the world’s
second-largest economy and the Federal Reserve’s
September meeting minutes due later in the day to gauge its policy path.
The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after a
sharp rally to a seven-week high last week.
Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was
last trading 12 pips lower than the previous late session close at 7.066.
Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint
rate, around which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar,
only 3 pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.

China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time
since Sept. 13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials
on Tuesday failed to offer much new on stimulus
plans to revive the economy. The yuan is down 0.7% against
the dollar so far this month, due to broad dollar strength, but the currency has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.

China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for
an upside surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists
led by Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.
“Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the strategists said.

Nevertheless, market participants are still
awaiting additional stimulus measures that could help
further lift China asset sentiment. Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade
well if local equities remain supported, similar to what happened in Nov.

2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.

The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar, up about 0.09% in Asian trade.
The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:00 pm on Wednesday but left before
being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire,
each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights

So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement

“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.

Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the
Republican holding a very narrow lead.

Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong
support and both appear likely to pass.

So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona
State University.

Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.

Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’
concerns about “government interference,” she added.

The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not
just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh, a
Republican and an Arizona state senator.

The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening
on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.

The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

July 16 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International said on Tuesday it would invest
$600 million to open a manufacturing facility in Colorado to
produce its Zyn nicotine pouches to help meet demand for alternatives to
traditional tobacco products in the U.S.

The plant is expected to begin preliminary operations by
2025 and create 500 jobs in the state, the world’s biggest tobacco company by market value
said, adding that it would invest the amount over the next two years through one of its U.S.
affiliates.

Philip Morris entered the U.S. market after it bought Zyn-parent Swedish Match
in a $16 billion deal in 2022, as part of its efforts to provide
alternatives to traditional cigarettes amid greater health awareness and stricter regulation.

The company has benefited from strong demand for Zyn, which it says does not contain tobacco, in the
United States, with shipments rising nearly 80% in the first
quarter over the year earlier.

But in June, Philip Morris suspended the nationwide sales on Zyn.com following a subpoena from the District of Columbia, which requested information about its compliance with the
state’s 2022 ban on the sale of all flavored tobacco.

Philip Morris is also seeking to launch its flagship heated tobacco
device IQOS in the U.S., with a test rollout expected in the second quarter – which the

Feb 8 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International forecast 2024 profit
below expectations and missed fourth-quarter estimates on Thursday, as heated tobacco product sales disappointed and higher costs weighed on performance.

The company had earlier said that pressures on its margins should ease in the second half of 2023, as factors such as increased use of third-party manufacturing in countries like Indonesia and Ukraine faded.

However, fresh blows to margins emerged in the fourth quarter, including higher
costs of marketing, energy and tobacco leafs, as well as
administrative expenses, sending its adjusted operating income margin down 2.8 percentage points to 33.7%.

Shares of PMI were down 2.3% in premarket trade.

Shipments of sticks for its flagship heated tobacco device IQOS also
fell short of analyst expectations, and PMI said they would be hit again in 2024 due to a ban on heated tobacco flavors in the European Union.

The company’s total cigarettes and heated tobacco units (HTUs)
shipment volumes dropped 0.5% in the fourth quarter, compared to a 2.2% increase in the third.

Philip Morris said it expected total cigarette, HTU and oral smoke-free product shipment volumes to be flat or grow by up
to 1% in 2024, mostly driven by smoke-free products.

It expects adjusted annual profit of between $6.32 and $6.44 per share,
while analysts were expecting $6.60 per share, LSEG data showed.

The downbeat forecast contrasts with that of rival Altria Group, which last week projected
2024 profit in line with expectations. It is betting on higher cigarette
prices and a shift to alternative nicotine products to cushion the blow from declining demand
for traditional tobacco products.

PMI reported fourth-quarter adjusted profit of
$1.36 per share. Analysts on average had expected a profit of $1.45.
