SURABAYA, WWW.BERITATERKINI.CO.ID, Dalam upaya menjaga ketahanan pangan nasional, banyak terobosan yang dilakukan para prajurit yang berdinas di Komando Pembinaan Doktrin Pendidikan dan Latihan Angkatan laut (Kodiklatal). Setelah sebelumnya mengembangkan berbagai tanaman hortikultura seperti tanaman tomat, cabe merah, bayam, dan sawi, pohong dan jagung.
Kini prajurit Bagpen Kodiklatal membuat terobosan baru dengan mengembangkan sistem tumpang sari antara tanaman buah naga dan jagung yang ditanam di lahan kosong sekitar perkantoran Bagian Penerangan (Bagpen) Kodiklatal Surabaya, Rabu (12/8).
Menurut Kepala Bagian Penerangan (Kabagpen) Kodiklatal Letkol Laut (KH) Agus Setiawan, S.S bahwa tanaman buah naga yang baru dikembangan prajurit Bagpen Kodiklatal tersebut masih baru dan langka untuk wilayah Surabaya. Adapun bibit buah naga tersebut didatangkan dari daerah sentra penghasil buah naga tepatnya Kabupaten Banyuwangi Jawa Timur.
Buah naga ini dikelompokan kedalam keluarga tanaman kaktus. Meskipun dikenal sebagai buah dari Asia, tanaman ini aslinya berasal dari Meksiko, Amerika Tengah dan Amerika Selatan. Karena rasanya manis, buah naga kemudian dikonsumsi secara meluas di Vietnam dan Cina, untuk di Indonesia, buah naga mulai populer sejak tahun 2000.
Dalam menanam tanaman buah naga ada beberapa tahapan yang harus dilaksanakan antara lain pembuatan tiang panjat bisa dari kayu atau cor beton yang berguna untuk menopang tumbuhnya batang buah naga, tahapan berikutnya adalah pengolahan tanah dengan menggemburkan area yang akan ditamami buah naga. Setelah tanah gembur baru dilaksankan penanaman dengan memperhatikan jarak antar tanaman.
Setelah penanaman perlu perawatan tanaman antara lain pemupukan dengan pupuk kompos, penyiraman bila musim kemarau, pemangkasan untuk membentuk batang pokok, membentuk cabang produksi dan pemangkasan peremajaan. Tanaman buah naga ini bisa dipanen untuk pertama kali pada bulan ke 10 hingga 12 terhitung setelah tanam. Namun apabila ukuran bibit tanamannya lebih kecil, panen pertamanya bisa mencapai 1,5-2 tahun terhitung setelah tanam.
Agar lahannya lebih produktif, maka para prajurit Bagpen Kodiklatal menanam tanaman tumpangsari diantara tanaman buah naga antara lain tanaman jagung, lombok dan sawi.
